Streams-For the last week of the year Maxwell is currently holding steelhead, however with predicted lake effect and frigid temps, the stream will be tough to fish. And you can’t pier fish because of ice build-up.
Bays-If the streams freeze-over you can’t cast for steelies, however that will be good news for ice anglers. This could be the year of solid ice. Currently the temperature is 18 degrees with the next ten days predicted to be in the ten-degree vicinity.
In Wayne, the first safe ice is at LeRoy Island, on the east side of Sodus Bay. Some anglers were out today, and the word is some nice pike and perch were being hauled through the holes.
Port Bay is close to be frozen over and by tomorrow there should be at least 4 inches in some places.
Never take chances with early ice, even if you know the bay you’re fishing on. Ice never freezes uniformly and with bubblers on the docks, areas might not have solid ice.
If the week stays cold, we will have solid safe ice.
The perch will be hitting larger jigs and during the autumn they were feeding on small bait fish, so “match the hatch.”

Erie Canal- The canal is frozen over and probably has safe ice. Try near Widewaters for perch and bluegills.
